About Your Coach Sam Waterfall
I'm an international career coach helping my clients when they know it is time to make changes in their careers. Often I help them to land dream jobs and pay raises. Other times, we're switching industries, re-directing after redundancies, or moving to avoid horrible bosses or toxic work cultures.
I've been privileged to work with clients from over 60 countries and from Students and Graduates to Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 Senior Leaders.
Today, my clients consistently land the jobs they want - often with the world's most sought-after employers including Facebook, Amazon, RedBull F1 Racing, Nike, The United Nations and The World Economic Forum.
But I believe career success is about far more than impressive employer brands. Many other clients find huge satisfaction and happier futures within their current organization, or with startups, non profits, charities or exciting new entrepreneurial ventures.
In August 1997 Tom Peters had written his then groundbreaking article 'The Brand Called YOU' which made the front cover of Fast Company magazine.
I was still an undergraduate at that time. And it would be another 5 years before I'd have the opportunity to meet my hero, Dr. Peters in person.
... But in that seminal article, I'd read the words that would inspire me to help thousands of clients...
"It’s time for me – and you – to take a lesson from the big brands, a lesson that’s true for anyone who’s interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper in the new world of work. Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today our most important job is to be head marketer for the Brand called YOU."
And that's what I've been helping my clients to do, and be, ever since.
I always begin by speaking with my clients in person. This lets me check that we have the right 'chemistry' and can work together and also that you have a challenge I can work with. I'm a coach. Not a miracle worker. There are limits to what I can do. And if I think I can't help you, or you don't need me, I'll tell you that during our initial call.
My clients think I'm obsessive about my "Step 1". They are right. I am. I call it "Career Direction" and it's the foundation for all of my coaching. Once we have your direction clear we can build the rest of your personal brand, marketing materials and career campaign.
I've always been a Marketer. I began my career at the original home of Brand Management, Procter & Gamble, where I learned to market products but soon recognised the need for Personal Branding and "Brand You" in successful careers.
I founded my business Obvious Candidate in 2004 in response to a huge redundancy move from my next employer, global pharmacy giant Walgreens Boots Alliance. While I kept my job that day, 1500 colleagues lost theirs. In the survivor's guilt-ridden aftermath, I discovered I had a knack for helping people to sell themselves as I began helping former colleagues to improve their CVs and resumes by applying proven marketing principles.
Since then, the "Obvious Candidate Method" has developed to meet the many needs of ambitious job seekers and promotion hunters.

For others it can be about escaping a problem and gaining freedom or flexibility.

I've been fortunate to have worked on the ground in more than 50 countries and served clients on 6 continents. I'm open for clients interested in Antarctic careers too, but I'm still awaiting a request from an Explorer, an Expedition Scientist or a Penguin.
